Beginner Crochet Tips
Crocheting can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby, but can be tricky to get started. Here are a few tips to get you going. 1. Use patterns within your skill level. If you've only been crocheting for a little while, look for patterns marked "Beginner" or "Easy." When patterns are marked as "Difficult" or "Expert," they mean it. A great place to find free patterns is Crochet Pattern Central. All the patterns listed here have pictures with them, so you can see what your finished product will look like. 2. Hold your yarn close to the hook. Using your hand that isn't holding the hook, hold your work between your thumb and middle finger, as closely to the hook as you can. This allows for better control of your work. 3. Use the grip that feels the most comfortable. Some people hold their crochet hooks like a knife, others hold them like a pencil. Whatever feels right, use! There's no wrong answer here. 4. Use basic yarns at first. There are a ton of fun yarns available, but when you're first beginning, it's a good idea to choose one that makes it easy to see your stitches. Keep practicing and you'll be ready for more difficult yarns in no time! 5. Talking to other crochet artists is a great way to build your knowledge and meet new friends. Try crochet classes and groups in your area, or check for forums online. Crochetville is a great, friendly place to meet new crocheting buddies and get advice. 6. Invest in wrist-supporting gloves. These fingerless gloves are relatively inexpensive (around $15), machine washable, and readily available at many craft stores. They're great for cutting down on wrist pain. 7. Relax. If your tension is too tight, you'll have a tough time getting your hook through your stitches. If you find that your foundation chain (the very first part of the project) is tighter than your other rows, try using a hook a size larger than the pattern calls for, then switching back to the smaller hook once your foundation chain is complete. Hopefully, this is information you can use. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is to just keep at it. Have fun and don't stress too much over making your project perfect, and you'll find yourself becoming more and more skilled at crochet. Enjoy! Edit: Someone asked where they can find information on learning to crochet. That would probably be good to know. ;) Click on "Learning to Crochet" in the links below to go to a site with various links on learning this craft. |
